Duke Jekyll and Mr Hyde

I can see why the film was such a commercial flop, but it is interesting seeing the Duke throw the Casanova charm away in the third act, to adopt the guise of a maniacal slavedriver, who appears to prefer work to wife.🐭

My impression was that Wayne's character loved his work, and had been doing it so long that his men and long-time partner had become his family. When he saw them one by one dying on the job due to his new father-in-law's pettiness and skimping on materials his mind went a little off kilter, sending him into 'psycho work mode' as it were.

I had faith that big John wouldn't let me down, that he would come to his senses and salvage his marriage to that amazing young woman, and sure enough the uber long runtime of the movie became almost worth it.
