the chicken or the egg? or just timing.

the acting is wonderful, the story is fine.

but the bones of the story is clearly Dragonwyck (Vincent Price) Carrolls was produced in 45, Dragonwyck released in 46.....

I'm a little surprised no one compared the two...

Perhaps the time periods threw everyone off.

yes that crossed my mind.... but... still.... :)

The source material of Carrolls (1944 play) predates the source material of Dragonwyck (1945 novel).

And the later film "Sorry! Wrong Number" with Stanwyck must have been inspired by this one.

On the TCM channel the host mentioned The Two Mrs. Carrolls was shelved for 2 years because it was similar to another film made at the same time. Perhaps Dragonwyck was that film. Apparently The Two Mrs. Carrolls was not wildly popular upon its release, but I enjoy watching films like this so am glad it was made.

Beat me to it FilmSpectator by 12 minutes.

"It's the system, Lara. People will be different after the Revolution."

I wonder if the other film was Conflict. It's pretty close to this story. Bogart is in love with his wife's sister Alexis Smith... You can imagine the rest.

Just saw "The Two Mrs. Carrolls" and thought it was a mash-up of Hitchcock's "Suspicion" and Ulmer's "Bluebeard": a pathological artist with a psychological compulsion to kill his models ("Bluebeard") and who does it by giving them poisoned milk ("Suspicion"). I also thought Warners might have finally released it in 1947 because they wanted to get it out before "Sorry, Wrong Number," a much better film in which Stanwyck plays a similar role (an invalid woman whose husband plans to do her in).
