It was difficult to accept Bogart in this


--as good an actor as he is, and the movie suffers IMO because of that.
I wonder why he even took the part.

I read that this film was shot in 1945; was not released until 1947. The studio felt there were other releases in '45 that were too similar in story to this one...So they shelved it for two years. It's been stated that by the '47 release; Bogart was now an established box office draw. May be if it had been released in '45; there might not have been so much opposition in his portraying this character. I love him in this! I think it's a bit more believable when a psychopath exhibits some sort of normalcy. After all...That is how they cloak and cover their deep and dark instabilities in every day normal life. Even Bogie's physical looks vacillate between handsome/attractive/sinister...And for me that adds greatly to a believable portrayal of such a heinous minded individual.
