What exactly was the drug ....

.....that Clem didn't want anything to do with? Was cocaine that easy to get in London in 1946? Or amphetamine..

LOL ! I'm watching this movie now for the 1st time. This scene just ended and I was left wondering same. Figured I'd check here and hopefully find the answer.
I was so happy to read 'What exactly was the drug...' because I knew it had to be this question (even though the film has just started). Actually I have 2 questions - what were they calling it ? Sounded like 'sherbert' to me ! The scene reminded me of 'The GF' which this movie of course pre dates by decades, but the same reaction to the idea of 'drugs'- their off limits ! "I'll kill, I'll steal I'll beat and rob but DO NOT expect me to get involved with that nasty business" LOL ! Someone must know exactly which drug they were handling. Well, back to the movie...

HELLO johne23-1,

It was, in fact cocaine of which "sherbet" was one of its nicknames. Amazingly, cocaine was not considered a controlled substance until 1970, when the United States listed it as such in the Controlled Substances Act. Until that point, the use of cocaine was open and rarely prosecuted in the US due to the moral and physical debates commonly discussed.

Best Wishes,
Tom

Cocaine was nicknamed "sherbert" because it resembled a very common child's sweet in the UK then called sherbert which often came in the form of a powder which fizzed in your mouth - or it could be diluted to make a fizzy drink.
