my issue with this movie.

I know alot of people do not like this film and think its lame but I enjoyed it. I knew it wasn't going to be a mindblowing epic. But I enjoyed this film, I had no issue with the age gap as a lot of my friends are dating older men. Also I grew up watching old movies and a lot of them have large age gaps not necessarily the characters, but the actors do.

Anyway to get to the point of this post, my issue with this film is that they should have added a bit of love scene, it went from Ronald Regan placing his hand on Shirley Temple's shoulder, to them going off into the sunset. Not that they had to kiss or anything but maybe extend the scene, before the train scene and show that Shirley Temple had feelings for him or that there was some kind of mutual attraction/affection on both sides. It was clear that he loved her when he realised. It was never exactly stated how she felt, maybe the writers didn't want to imply incest or it could have been uncomfortable due to the age gap.

It's possible I need to sit down and watch this movie again. Unfortunately I have only seen it once (on youtube) and it hasn't been released on DVD nor have I seen it on TV yet. Well here's hoping it will be released or that someone will post it online.

The only Abnormality is the incapacity to love

That's exactly what I was thinking! When did they fall in love!?

I had no inkling that they were going to end up together and was totally surprised when the teacher lady told Tom that she knew he was in love with Mary. I thought Tom was going to end up with the teacher lady and Mary was going to end up with Ken. Showed me!

That caught me right out of left field. And even at the end, I still wasn't convinced they were together because they had no love scene or anything like that. I would have preferred that it turned out that he really was her father or that he ended up with the teacher and she married that guy that proposed. I did not care for that ending, but the movie was very good.

Their attraction to each other is meant to be subtle. They're even subtle about it with each other. That's because these two people have been living under an unwanted spotlight for a long time. Their relationship with each other is even fodder for gossips.

If you were paying attention though, you would have noticed that Mary was with Tom and the teacher every time they were out on what might seem like a date. Then at Tom's house, he preferred to spend time with Mary than with Ms. Kane. She even acknowledges it by leaving them alone. She knew he wasn't interested in her the way he was in Mary.

Later, when Tom talks to Mary about helping her get an education, he's clearly disappointed when she brings up Ken. Again, it's all very subtle. On Mary's part, she talks about Ken's immaturity. She says girl's mature faster so she needs an older man. Also, when Ken's mother lets her know she does not approve, she's not at all bothered by her because she's already over Ken.

Tom's attraction to Mary may have started out as protective but the more he knew her, the more he liked her. Mary was obviously interested in Ken but when there started to be issues with him she lost interest. When he tried to win her back she wasn't having it. Who would want his witch mother as a mother-in-law?

I would have preferred that it turned out that he really was her father
To say that means you missed the point of the movie. There was never any possibility Tom was Mary's father. I thought it was clear early on to the viewer. To the town's people it may have seemed that way but really gossip isn't even about what things seem, it's about having something to talk about. Often the people gossiping know what they're saying has no basis in reality. They just don't care.

That's the point. The truth doesn't matter to gossips. It's the reason Tom leaves town and never tries to clear things up. He could have stood in the town center and said it wasn't true but it wouldn't have mattered. The gossips would not have stopped. The story they came up with was better; more fun to repeat; their reason to judge.

Woman, man! That's the way it should be Tarzan. [Tarzan and his mate]

Sorry but I thought it was too subtle. Even if I noticed it in the back of my mind, it was something I did not want to see because to me the notion of those two getting together I found to be creepy. And I don't mean that as much in the sense of their age difference, but the fact that he could've been her father and he ended up getting together in the end. Similar to that movie with Fred Astaire where he's like 50 and hooks up with some teenager. It was just something I never would've been rooting for. Sometimes in a movie you root for 2 people to get together in the end. This was certainly not one of those times from my perspective.

But You say that was the point of the movie. It didn't have to be. The point could've been made that gossip can be vicious regardless of whether or not they were together. I don't believe this movie had that deep of a message to begin with. Nor did I need it to. My point was that I would've enjoyed a different ending.
