Lauren Bacall wisely turned it down.

It was probably the first part of a double feature (they used to have those in the old movie theaters), to be followed by the "A"-flick or "prestige picture;" its type was a dime-a-dozen and it's probably a bit unfair to judge it too harshly, since it's only a "programmer" or opener for the main feature. Still decent fare for family viewing, at least.

It is a very good movie, and Lauren Bacall foolishly turned it down. No loss for the audience, because Alexis Smith was excellent in the role, as was Zachary Scott in his. Best of all was Ronald Reagan, a good actor who was also extremely charismatic and likable. Unfortunately, there will always be smoothbrains who aren't bright enough to realize it.
