Reference to Somerset Maugham?

When Nick Charles is on the ship, he stoops over and picks up a razor blade and makes a reference to Sommerset Maugham saying something like, "well, it couldn't be Somerset Maugham".

Does anyone know what this reference means? What is the connection to this author?

I found the answer - a pun. One of Maugham's works was titled "The Razor's Edge" thus the reference/meaning that this one didn't belong to Maugham. Took me a few minutes but figured it out!

As a side note, the movie "The Razor's Edge" was released in 1946, so it wasn't an obscure reference when the movies this movie was released.
