missing prints

Approx just how many prints would have been distributed world wide for a generally released movie such as SO WELL REMEMBERED ? Would distributors have recalled all the prints for storage once any movie had completed its commercial run? Is there any evidence to confirm that Edward Dymtryc's problems with HUAC resulted in the disappearance of all the prints except one ? Certainly the movies content would have given the studio cause for concern, in the days of the Communist witch hunts.
