Was Hayward NOT in the ending??

The very last scene of the film seems very odd to me. Hayward has her back to the camera, and we don't so much as catch a glimpse at her face. Is this an ending that was reshot later, and Hayward wasn't available for it? The woman with her back to the camera could have been anyone. It just seems too strange for a director to have intended the scene to be shot that way. Anybody know what's behind it?

NO I do not know any info on this but I watched this today after a few years and found this one scene very odd as well. It is Hayward's voice but definitely not her in the chair. What a very odd way to end the movie. It is the most important scene and all we get is her back to the screen...Very odd.

The ending was just stuck on and very unrealistic. It didn't seem like it was Susan Hayward but maybe the movie-makers could explain it by saying they didn't want to show her burned/scarred face. But the ending ruined the movie.

I don't have a conclusive answer, but I thought that it was just a way to get out of showing her burns from the fire.

When we see her flee, she doesn't seem to have been harmed very badly, but in the hospital most of her face is bandaged.
