Can someone explain all the gags please?

For the sake of us kiddies, can someone explain all the gags?

In order of appearance

Band leader: Leopold Stokowski
Man with razor: Gregory Peck
Man with typewriter: Ray Milland
Skinny man: Frank Sinatra
Customer: Humphrey Bogart
3 customers: The Marx Brothers
Fat man: Sydney Greenstreet
Singer: Carmen Miranda
Baby: Lauren Bacall

Ok, I got the obvious gags (Bogie, Bacall, Marx Bros, Carmen), but I can't figure out some of the others, like why is Gregory Peck eating his steak with a razor? What's the significance of typewriters for Ray Milland?

reply

Gregory Peck's turn with the razor is reference to his character in Alfred Hitchcok's "Spellbound" (1945).

Ray Milland's business with the typewriter is a paeon to his Oscar-winning turn in the Oscar-winning best picture "The Lost Weekend" (1945).

Seeing the films themselves does more justice in explaining the gags than mere words ever could.

Thanks, Chester! I saw Spellbound ages ago, but I don't remember anything but the weird Caligari-esque dream sequence near the end. I'll be on the lookout for The Lost Weekend. You're right; I should see them myself rather than try to get the jokes second hand. Great tips!

I'm pretty sure Joan Crawford is in there too, right at the beginning, sitting at a table with a guy, and on her left is another table with Irene Dunn? or Barbara Stanwyck? and some guy with a strong chin and sunken eyes.
