UK DVD release

The Eureka Masters of Cinema PAL DVD is absolutely stunning quality: not only is it better than the theatrical prints in circulation beforethe restoration or Waterbearer’s NTSC video release but, considering the technical problems that plagued its production, probably looks better now than it did in 1949 even with the odd scratch or slight tramline in a few shots. And the 56-page booklet, complete with the Melville on Melville interview about the film, is pretty good too. Well worth picking up.

Will this play OK on a 4:3 NTSC TV? I bought the BFI version of Le Doulos. It played fine out my code free DVD, but the subtitles were authored 625, so they were at the top of the screen. Just wondering if this DVD is authored the same way.

I noticed a lot of lines in the first 30 minutes, particularly at the start. I don't know if I got used to it as the film progressed or whether it went away or not.

don't let that put anyone off though.
