He just vanished about 45 minutes in. Everyone was there at the ending, but I didn't see him. I know he was small, but I think he was big enough that I would have noticed him. Did I miss something?
Also, did I miss something huge? The feminine female at the beginning is supposed to be the same person as the not-so-feminine Rene at the end? Either they were played by two different people or I'm totally slipping.

The only reason I can guess for this was the intention to throw off any suspicion of that character. If we see that she is a woman, then we wouldn't suspect 'her' as the culprit at the end, who turns out to be Rene dressed as that same woman. If they had a male play that part from the start, I suppose their thinking went, then the viewer would be suspicious right from the start. Then we wouldn't be wondering so much about the doctor, or Bela, or the dwarf....that's my guess anyway. If so, though, that violates so many precepts of good storytelling, I don't even know where to begin ~
