......and I cannot fathom why it isn't better known.

The cast (Robert Mitchum, Teresa Wright, Dean Jagger, Judith Anderson, Alan Hale) is excellent, the script is well written by Niven Busch, Raoul Walsh directed, and James Wong Howe was the cinematographer.

It really needs more word of mouth.

It's not well known? Wow, I never knew that. I thought it was one of the mile stones of cinema, really. And I always heard it referred to as such.

Loved it for all the reasons stated.

Not to mention the fact that music was by the great Max Steiner (did the music for Gone with the Wind).
