Feels more like film noir than a western

This western is really film noir in disguise. You know - silhouetted figures, star-crossed lovers, and a femme fatale. It oftentimes doesn’t even feel like a western. So no good old-fashioned showdowns, Indian battles, or stagecoach hold-ups. Some might call it a welcomed departure from the usual. I call it a crappy action movie. 1.5 action rating.

Great Film Noir in a western setting.

It's a film noir-western IMHO and I think it's an excellent movie.

Feels like a poorly developed story and a bunch of melodramatic bullsh-t with miss Wright doing her overwrought hand wringing - and Robert Mitchum not doing anything at all besides being Robert Mitchum.

Robert Mitchum being Robert Mitchum made him one of the most sought after actors and voice over for commercials until they day he died.

Of course it does! That was the intention!

reply

It could not have been the intention to make it Film Noir since the term became known and accepted only decades later. It is just a normal western influenced by the cinematography of the time.

reply

I don't think this is film noir. It's a normal western with dark photography. Having Mitchum and noirish look doesn't make it film noir at all.

i agree

I also agree, although it is actually listed on both the BFI top 100 film noir list and the BFI top 100 western list.
