This is one of those, We're seeing it unfold as it's told, and knowing women (who are just like men, pretty much), the poor new good girlfriend of Mitchum must have been in Hell listening to a story about her man's romance: A closeup on her chocking a teddybear would have elevated the tension. Of course they'd have to establish the Teddy Bear. Might get in the way but this is a sort of intentionally aimless kind of accidental b-movie masterpiece so why not...
