Odd Man Out - Johnny at the End

Movie girl: I do not want to create a spoiler, but wish everyone to reconsider the
last scene. IT is different than the book. In the book we get the idea (and here
Johnny cannot speak or recall her name) that Johnny finally realizes and reciprocates Kathleen's feelings. It is one of the most beautiful passages of
love realized - perhaps too late. One of the most profound I have ever encountered.

In the film Johnny speaks a little and it is evident that he is glad to see his friend because she is his great friend. Here there is no distinction made of personal feelings.

But I feel differently, having just re-read the book...

Anyone else have another perception of it?
