Visually anticipates the Third Man

Odd Man Out visually anticipates Carol Reed's masterwork of a few years later, The Third Man. In fact, some of the long shots in Odd Man Out, could have been seamlessly inserted into The Third Man, and no one would be the wiser.

Particularly Odd Man Out's many shots of wet alley ways with shadowy characters running away from the camera, just like the introduction of Harry Lime in The Third Man.

Also, the reaction shots of the old ladies and others to actions that is the primary focus. Moreover, Reed's use of cock-eyed angles tilted this way and that, to add counter point to whatever is going on in a particular scene.

Odd Man Out is a very good film, with emotional poignancy. It is no surprise that is holds up today as well as when it was first release about seventy years ago, as does The Third Man, since they both spun out of the creative direction and imagination of Carol Reed.

Odd Man Out, The Third Man, see them both, both are worth any amount of time you spend watching them.
