I was born for it

When Power delivered that line - yikes! Shoulda got an Oscar just for that one moment.

Tyrone Power was born for this movie. His polished, shiny good looks and big black eyes were all the better for playing a con man. No one could have pulled it off better. I saw it years ago, but several images are still ingrained in my mind.

He was barely recognizable at the end. Amazing performance.

It is criminal that this movie is not considered a classic and that Tyrone Power and Ian Keith did not win their awards, let alone get nominated! Am I to believe that Ronald Coleman in Random Harvest was better? He's fine actor, but that was a sympathy award.
What an amazing movie filled with top notch performances.

reply

Ronald Colman was nominated but did not win the oscar for "Random Harvest" he won the oscar for "A Double Life".

I agree that at the very least, Power should have been nominated for "Nightmare Alley". Perhaps the movie wasn't widely seen when it was first released.

Those who vote in the oscars are a strange bunch. Edward G. Robinson was never even nominated for an oscar, and he great in both gangster and non-gangster roles.

reply

Whoops! My bad. I did mean "A Double Life."
Eddie G should have an Oscar for "Scarlet Street" and for "Double Indemnity"
I would also throw him many nods for many of his movies, even the underrated "Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse"!!
Don't get me started on Hitchcock never winning the Director Oscar!

Just remembering the way Power delivered that line makes my flesh crawl.

It's one of the lasting shames of Hollywood that his considerable ability and skills were not put to better use.

IA, the expression on his face! He was completely unrecognizable as the 20th Century Fox hunk, he looked like a degenerate. I was shocked at the transformation.

Movie was ahead of its time.

Stanton says "I was MADE for it" not "I was born for it".

reply

EXACTLY - his character's life's experience both up and down had "made" him for it. That's the horror of it.
