SPOILER ALERT! Did Lavinia really go to bed with a native on the tropical island? Oh, the horror of forbidden interracial love! Lavinia threatened to kill in order to suppress the allegation; Orin was disgusted with her and tries to reveal her secret to fiance Kirk Douglas; and Kirk fled from her because of it. This was taboo just after the Civil War, the play's setting; and was evidently still hot stuff for 1940s audiences. Seventy years later? We lust after nine foot tall, blue skinned, scantily clad alien warriors who breathe toxic gas. Ah, progress.
