1974 huh?

You posted this five years ago. I wonder what the chances are that anyone will ever read this.

Doesn't matter. It was a crappy movie anyway, along the lines of another (rare) Jimmy Stewart stinker, "Pot O' Gold".

I rather enjoyed it actually. The folk humor isn't quite as skillfully manipulative as some of Stewart's pictures with Frank Capra, but it's intelligently written and refreshingly unpredictable for the most part. It's merely a pleasant slice of Americana fantasy about the triumph of small town values over worldly cynicism, a clear influence on Pleasantville certainly, without very much to gripe over in it.

That sure is one heck of a coincidence, Fuzzynavel, how we were both the first two people to post to the "magic town" board in 5 years, within 14 minutes of each other. And there was only one other post before our's - 5 years ago! Our minds must have been telepathically interlocked.

Actually I just saw the film for the first time on Friday night, and was curious to see what kind of action its message board saw. The movie was basically a random selection I made from my library really. I'd been trying to cover some of the major Hollywood directors of the early days, and having liked a few things from William A. Wellman (The Public Enemy, The Ox-Bow Incident), I searched through the available titles in his filmography, and this was the first one I came across.

And yes, the fact that someone replied to my post within hours when I thought that no one would ever visit this message board again, kind of freaked me out.

Admittedly, I have not seen this film since I was 16, some twenty years ago. I was a big Jimmy Stewart fan as a kid, so I would spend my hard-earned money I made sacking groceries on VHS movies. I started buying all the Jimmy Stewart films released on video cassette at the time, including this one. I think it set me back $30. I'll never forget how bummed I was. Back then, I saw it as a Capra wanna be film that didn't quite measure up, and I was out $30. Still have it, and never watched it again. Hard to believe it was twenty years ago.

It's a darned good thing I rented "Pot O' Gold" first before purchasing it. I remember Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show asking Jimmy what he thought was the worst film he'd ever made. Jimmy said it was "Pot O' Gold". Boy, was he right. It's hard to sit through. Gary Cooper's worst had to be "Good Neighbor Sam".

A movie with both Smith and Stewart, is never crap.

reply

Totally disagree. I liked it very much. I don't believe I've ever seen a movie with James Stewart that I didn't like.

The by all means you must see "Pot O' Gold". I think you'll love that one too.

reply

Heh. I'll try it when I can. Why didn't you like it? I mean, Pot O' Gold?

Well, if I'm remembering correctly, it was just a bunch of long-forgotten mediocre musical segments strung together under the guise of a thin plot regarding the son (Jimmy Stewart) of a local radio station owner. It also included a lot of dated comedy lines from the cast. Even Jimmy regretted making it, considring it the worst film he ever made. I remember him recounting this in at least two interviews - one with Carson - before he died. And I would watch ANYTHING with Jimmy Stewart at the time. For me, he could do no wrong.

In a word, it was horrible.

I'm not too crazy about this movie either but the one thing that stands out for me is that scene between Jimmy and Jane Wyman in the gym, pretty hot imo!

I saw this movie ontv years ago. Now i live in the town of Chico CA where it was filmed and would like to see what the town looked like in 1947 but cant find a copy of the movie.

reply

Amazon has used VHS copies starting at about $6.

I looks like DVDs were made but not available now. Nothing on NETFLIX either.

reply

You can buy the DVD at amazon.co.uk. It's a good copy, I own it :)

I actually just watched this movie on Netflix Instant Queue, if anyone has Netflix.

I decided to watch it because I found it sort of funny that someone would make a romantic comedy centered around public opinion polling. With Jimmy Stewart.

Although it was an enjoyable feature based on the performances, its theme of wholesome community values were exaggeratedly presented and Rip's change in character happened with no surprise from an audience's perspective.

LOL! I don't think the OP ever actually finished his post way back in 2002. I think the song was just called The High School Song and was sung to the tune of I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen. Not sure of the lyrics in the film. Something about good old Grandview High I guess.🐭

Sorry this is nearly 14 years too late, but maybe this link will help:

It is the full song, "My Book of Memory", with Spanish subtitles. Just re-translate the Spanish, and you'll have the lyrics. And shame on all of you out there who strayed from the subject for all these many years.

"The chapel bells on Christmas Eve"....what school today would allow that lyric?
