At First, I Thought It Was A Columbia Picture

I caught it on Turner Classic Movies yesterday and I missed the opening credits and came in 15 minutes into it.

I mean, it was made in 1947, and with it in black-and-white and the lighting for it, it looked like a Coumbia picture.

M-G-M didn't make musicals in black-and-white anymore by 1947, so I thought.

Wrong!!

Anyway, does anyone know why this was shot in black-and-white?

The movie was shot as a non-musical comedy. It has similarities to La Cava's other B&W comedies -- the ditzy family, the class conflict, the spoiled rich girl, the noble hero. But after the shoot either Gene Kelly or the producer suggested adding musical numbers. So Kelly and Stanley Donen choreographed the three musical numbers. What a boon! A delightful La Cava comedy with three Gene Kelly dances!!!!
