$4.50 for an umbrella in the late 1800s?!


I wouldn't spend that much on an umbrella today! Well, maybe that much. But in the late 1800s? No wonder Father was a tyrant with the books!

Using the Consumer Price Index, $4.50 in 1885 is the equivalent of $109.00 in 2012. Yikes!

A Brigg costs $350, so $109 isn't very expensive for an umbrella. At least not for a financier.
