Maid talking about redheads

At the beginning of the movie the new maid keeps making some comment each time she sees each family member for the first time and realizes he is a redhead. Does anyone know why she was getting so hysterical about the family being all redheads?

From what I can figure, it must be some kind of superstition. Her gestures must be a way to get around "Making the sign of the cross".

Many European Immigrants in the 19th Century were still dealing with the folk lore and superstitions of their various homelands. In many societies, red headed children were considered to be "marked" or even bewitched...

Imagine a youngster like Annie, growing up in a country village. She comes to America, and finds a grand job in a fine New York Townhouse. The first person she meets is Vinnie, who, in spite of the bright red hair, is a kind and considerate mistress.

Can't you see her shock, at the first sight of the REST of the family? A shouting, blustering father and four gawky, energetic sons: all with BRIGHT RED HAIR!!!

Well, gingers have no souls, after all...
