Uniquely ahead of its time

This seemed pretty modern for a 1947 film , in its use of real location, restrained style, humanity, etc. It looked more like a european, or french film noir . I love his little heartfelt scenes with his kids, and him trying to come to terms with his new life and his past. It's different than most film-noirs I've seen and one of my favorite films from the 40's.

Actors are like cows. You have to lead them through a fence.

It's funny. I had that same observation watching this for the second time. This is a suspenseful and realistic film.

It definitely marks itself out from other films of the time. I've rated it 8/10.
