Rooney showed maturity in this one

I was very impressed with Mickey Rooney in this film. His acting was quite good. He had the support of some terrific actors around, especially the tragic father figure, played masterfully by James Dunn, the good-bad guy, Jim Caighn, played very well by the great Brian Donlevy and once again, Ann Blyth shows surprising depth as the girl caught between the interests of Caighn and Rooney's McCoy.

The ending was pretty pat, they tied it all up in a very predictable way, but everything else leading up to that moment was done quite well so that I didn't really mind the ending.

The boxing scenes were excellent. Edge of the seat stuff. Not quite as good as The Set Up, but still very good.
