New Utrecht High School

New Utrecht HS is featured in this movie and in the 70s TV series "Welcome Back, Kotter" The opening sequence of WBK shows the high school building from the elevated train tracks that runs along New Utrecht Avenue formerly the West End Line, then the "B" train, now God knows what. I was a student there from 1952 to 1955 but i never realized I was a sweathog.

Gabe Kaplan went to New Utrecht - that's why he used NUHS for the opening exteriors of WBK. But, WHY was the ficticious school in this movie visually IDed as New Utrecht? Did the director or one of the producers go there perhaps? Anyboy got an idea?
