I love this movie because...

I had a CD of Maria Callas singing Lakme (the legand of the pariah's Daughter. I lost the CD and didn't know the name of the song. I was watching this one day and there was the Lovley Kathryn Grayson singing Lakme. Now I will never forget the name and it's one of my favorites.

Wonderful it is, and just one of the charms of this forgotten film. The English speaking world knows this song as "The Bell Song." Its from Act II of Lakme, by Leo Delibes.

The premier was in 1883 and since then many sopranos have sung Lakme, but few had the great success with "The Bell Song" that the great French soprano Lily Pons did in the 1930s and 40s. She pretty much "owned" it. Fortunately, in addition to records, she sang it in a movie, "I Dream Too Much," (1934). Her co-star was a very young Henry Fonda! Its not one of the great musicals, but its worth watching at least once if you can find it.
