The ending

Im really confused by the ending. Can someone tell me if she is with Johnny or George, because at first I thought she was with Johnny on the fire truck but then why is he wearing the moccasins around his waist? Does anyone know?

I think it was Johnny, but I'm a little confused too.

I couldn't believe my eyes, when i saw this was coming on TCM. I made sure I had two recorders going. I remembered this from my childhood, and has always been in the forefront when I would think of 'romantic' movies. I wasn't disappointed. Thoroughly enjoyable. That is....until the ending.

Huh? I wonder if there is a scene missing, which ended on the cutting room floor, because, all of a sudden, Johnny did a 180!! Without any discussion, he changed his mind in a flash (well...false alarm flash lol!) As far as the moccasins, I'm thinking it was a way of saying they were one in the same, and Johnny having them, truly perpetuated the 'magic' of it all.

Can't wait to share this with my sisters and nieces. We should have a slumber party and watch a bunch of these 'chick' flicks.

On a separate note, Cornel Wilde was a patient at our radiology office, in the late 80's, and was very congenial. On the patient info form, under 'Sex' he wrote yes. Still had a twinkle in his eye. : )

that last bit about Mr. Wilde being a patient in your office really made me smile. thanks for sharing, Stargzn.

George told Victoria that she had to find who ever he is and he would be out of her life with no regrets. He made no reference to merging with Johnny. He told Victoria in another part of the movie that he stepped out of her dream. Also,George is not a angel! email ( [email protected] )

George is in Victoria`s house at the wedding calling the fire department. The moccasins Johnny had on his belt represent him as a little boy. Remember George gave his moccasins to the butler in the beginning of the movie. And the butler gave George his shoes. ( email [email protected] )

No need to be confused by the ending.Victoria is with Johnny on the fire truck. The moccasins on his belt represent Johnny as a little boy at Victoria`s costume party in the old movies when they were six years old.( email [email protected] )

I too saw it tonight for the first time, stuck with it, being from Oklahoma, had a bit of trouble with the Indian thing. But when it made the childhood connection, and putting it in perspective, time frame and all, I tried to put that part behind me. When I saw the connection in the department store, I was hooked. As a little girl who dreamed of the perfect Prince Charming and longed for that man, I could "Get it", the guy who walks out of her dreams and tells her to wait for that guy. An interesting and different story. Too bad they don't make them like that much anymore. I too saw the ending as the muse and the real guy coming together.

The fact you're asking that question tells me you didn't understand the movie. It's not just the ending though, it's the whole thing but I can't blame you. I can see why it would be confusing. There are clear mistakes in the plot that, I feel, are to blame.

For one, other people can see George; that's a problem. It may have been good for a few laughs initially but, as we can see by some of the comments here, it also caused confusion. I enjoyed those scenes early in the movie when George interacts with other people but that aspect of the story constitutes a major plot hole, in my opinion.

Ginger should have been the only person to see and interact with George. The laughs and the plot would have centered on her strange and unexplained behaviors as she tries to keep him hidden; not realizing he couldn't be seen. Obviously, everyone would think she's lost it due to stress and would send her away for some much needed rest and to consider her future. Naturally, George 'appears' often.

Upon returning, Victoria runs into Johnny. Thinking he's George, she tries to avoid him; fearing her family will think she's relapsed. Feeling the strong attraction, Johnny pursues her but being a real person instead of a figment of her imagination, he does a better job. Now she thinks she's lost her mind falling for a guy who doesn't exist. He tells her of his dream and they discover they've both meant for each other from the start... or something like that.

I enjoyed the movie but think it has too many problems. Another big one is the fact I like George a whole lot more than Johnny. It should have been the other way around but it couldn't be. George is playful, funny, and charmingly annoying but Johnny is far too serious, suspicious, and straight laced for Victoria.

Given the circumstances, it makes complete sense for him to be that way but the way he is affects who Victoria is too. Since she has to convince him of their connection instead of it being more organic and natural, she comes across as needy, desperate, even pathetic. The fact they have so much in common also seems more creepy than romantic.

Because George and Johnny co-existed, they had to make them very different. It was an effort to avoid confusion but, as a result, Johnny's arrival in the story is awkward and more confusing than it needed to be. Instead of resolving Victoria's problems, as it should have, it made her seem crazier than ever.

Had it been better handled, people wouldn't be asking if it was George or Johnny she ends up with; it would be very obvious. I should be able to say, of course, it's Johnny; George doesn't exist but I can't. Her family met George, spent time with him, saw him. How could they if he wasn't real but if he was real, where did he go? See how problematic that is?

I know what they were trying to do but I think it failed. What I like about the movie, what I think works, is Ginger's antics as Victoria before Johnny arrives and Cornell's mischievous portrayal of George.
