So Sad!

OMG, all the gossip! Just a nice man trying to help a poor young girl out ... He loses his wife (good riddasnce! GREAT job AL), his job, his rep and he's accused of murder!
Glad it worked out at the end -- but no wonder his heart gave out!

SPOILER

I for one think he was crazy to burn Effie's suicide note. It would have cleared him in everyone's mind.

There's nice and then there's stupid.

Just be truthful and if you can fake that you've got it made. ;)

reply

Hindsight and all.
I think if he had known better he might have had a change of mind. Particularly if he had gone to prison

reply

What hindsight?
He was still trying to clear his name.

I saw part of it this morning. I'm sorry to say that I missed the beginning. I really thought, because the note was still in his hand, that it would be found and used to clear him. Then...for them to burn it in the end. Didn't he want to clear himself? Or had he been cleared? Did I miss something?

reply

I agree with you. I guess he was legally cleared, but still under suspicion. I guess it was considered noble of them to protect the reputations of the dead, or out of kindness to the old man who lost his son.

Maybe, the fact that a few people knew about the letter besides the Sabre and Nona characters, meant that the gossip would get around to clear them anyway.

But yeah, I'd have kept the letter anyway, as back-up.

Me, too! Once it was burned...it was gone! But maybe it meant that there was going to be a happy ending. I had never seen this movie before and wish it hadn't been on so darn early. I think I missed about 20-25 minutes. I would have enjoyed seeing the entire thing. I loved seeing these wonderful actors when they were really young. Good ol' TCM!

reply

Oh yeah, just love TCM. Did you catch the other Kerr movie today, The Innocents? That was good to see again too.

reply

No...darn it. I had to leave about 8am and missed the other movies. It must be her birthday (I'll check that out here in IMDb) or she's the 'star of the day'...or something like that... where TCM shows someone's movies back to back all day. I went through the menu earlier and saw that she also appeared in a movie with Yul Brynner (sp). I had no idea that she did something with him besides The King and I. Like I said...good ol'd TCM. I've learned so much watching and listening to Robert Osborne and the other hosts. They tell a bit about the movie and/or the actors in it. I love that! It makes it so much more interesting.

reply

Yes, today was Deborah Kerr Day on TCM. :)

I just looked it up...it's her birthday! I didn't know.

Agreed, they were crazy to burn Effie's note while a murder charge was looming. Walter Pidgeon and Deborah Kerr (who I generally like) are insufferably noble here, protecting the reputations of two dead people who didn't bother to protect their reputations while alive. Or keep their pants on. Since Effie was a friend, she wouldn't want her friend Mark to be punished for a crime he did not commit. Blame the production team for the illogical ending. PS Jeez, what a town without pity! As if Effie was the only girl in the entire UK who got preggers from a soldier during WW2.

Effie's death was ruled a suicide so he would not be on trial for murder. Nona believed what really happened and they decided together that they could not allow the old man to know that he not only lost his son, but also his son's baby, hence the burning of the note. I suppose they felt that their love would be stronger than the gossip surrounding Effie's pregnancy and suicide. Personally, I hope they would decide to leave that small town and put all the heartache behind them.

reply

Yes, the editor of the paper knew the truth. But the older man lost his son. He did not need to know that he also lost a grandchild when she committed suicide.

I missed the part when she did it. I guess she could no longer take the gossip about her and Marco? She was upset she was ruining his reputation? Did she have the feeling the father of the baby would not return? If his father knew the child was his son's, I am sure he would have helped her and the baby.

But think the point made at the end when Nona burned the letter was that they could survive the gossip to save others from any humiliation and more gossip!

Effie was named in the divorce suit which stated adultery.
