Paulette Goddard
I thought Paulette Goddard was miscast in this movie, but I don't know who I would put in her place. However, I really liked the movie and thought the colors, costumes, sets and acting were excellent.

sharePaulette Goddard is one of my favourite stars but I agree. She doesn't have the gossamer, light comedy playing that is vital to an Oscar Wilde comedy. She plays it on one note which is a shame - with a better director she may have triumphed.
shareI saw this movie last night and one can "feel" the Oscar Wilde's dialogues better than in the 1999 version. It's funny to notice that everybody talks in "quotable quotes". Paulette Godard was cast probably with an eye on the American market. And I love Diana Wynyard. I had only seen her in her earlier roles (One More River, Rasputin and the Empress, Cavalcade, etc.), but as a slightly mature woman she looks more beautiful and regal. I did not notice her in Island in the Sun.

How about Glynins Johns? She would have been better in the PG role.
Joan Fontaine or Olivia de Haviland would have been better than Goddard.
