This Movie

is a big fat bag of slop. It is nothing, but a romantic dishrag full of overheated histrionics and mediocre hanky hobbling. Yuch.

Nothing exists more beautifully than nothing.

Good song, though

I loved this movie for all the things mentioned. The emotion and backstory really helped me enjoy this as a classic. And Donna Reed surprised me yet again when I don't look for her in something, as this was my first time seeing it and noticing her part in the film. Every time she manages to leave me asking the name of that adorable lady whom I don't believe I've seen before; that is till I realize it's her . . . yet again. Then there is also the fact that Lana Turner took my breath away. Of course, the starring gentlemen played their parts just as well, and that is why I gave this one a thumbs up.

I liked this movie and I almost liked the book. I couls watch Lana in just about anything from her early career. She was stunning.

Any movie in which Santa Claus and the Wizard of Oz are in love with the same woman has to be a classic!

I adore this film!!! I was a child when I first saw it on television....when I was a young teenager I read the book....the story, the acting, the actors, the magnificent music has stayed with me even until now when I'm an old woman...I have only one complaint though -- Why on earth was it not filmed in technicolor...this film literally screams for color...I'll bet there's a very interesting story behind the decision to go with b/w instead of color.

R.I.P. Richard Hart....

MGM probably would not have been able to recoup the negative cost of the film had it been filmed in technicolor. Paramount released DeMille's UNCONQUERED also in 1947, while Fox released FOREVER AMBER. While both technicolor films are listed as top-grossers, they lost money for their respective studios.

Also, there was a lot of matte process work in GREEN DOLPHIN STREET which in this particular film would have looked less authentic had it been filmed in color (i.e. the nunnery at St. Pierre).

Of all Turner's MGM vehicles, she was at her most stunningly beautiful in this one. THE THREE MUSKETEERS runs a close second.

True, but you have to admire anything done with such great style. Lana Turner's elaborate coiffures alone are worth the price of admission.

"Green Dolphin Street" is fabulous!!! Great story, unusual settings, Lana Turner and Donna Reed at the height of their beauty, talented Richard Hart in one of his few films, peerless supporting cast, unforgettable music, awesome special effects!! There are lots of movies you can accuse of being "a big fat bag of slop," but this isn't one of them!

I also like this film and especially Kaper's magnificent score. One interesting faux-pas though. When the nuns come out of the convent at the beginning, the door they exit from does not match the long-shot exit door (it's on the wrong side !)
