ANACHRONISM

The GOOFS section points out that the women's outfits and hairdos are not from the 20s, but from the time the movie was made. What motivated such an obvious anachronism? In 1947 there were still plenty of people who remembered well the fashions of the time of Pres Coolidge.

It's often like that with movies set in the future. I recently watched Farenheit 451. Everything about it was so 60s.

There's an art to making love. And you don't even have a paintbrush.

........I'm only guessing, but since "Good News" is an escapist 1947 musical the studio didn't feel the need to research the historical accuracy of the clothing...........Also this is a technicolor movie and the clothing and many of props may have been chosen on the basis of how they appeared on screen. I'm not an expert on what college students wore during the twenties but, given the the times, more conservative and much drabber and not as photogenic then in this film.

The time period was only 20 years past. I'm sure many people knew exactly what things were like then, and many of the controlling people backstage were probably of perfect age to understand it (in their 40s or so). I'm absolutely positive what REAL typical '80s styles were, e.g. I don't need to research.

As for what they were like - generally, the girls were way off. The boys pretty good.

If anything, the above it typical - it's like they don't want girls ever to appear out of date, or "at their most beautiful" for the contemporary audience. Look at '60s movies and TV - RIFE with '60s-like fashion for women in every period piece. Never mind '60s fashion was horrific as it is.

The 2000 DVD release of "Good News" has a couple of clips from the 1930 film version. In "The Varsity Drag" number from that film, the girls are all wearing suits with striped jackets. Those same suits show up from time to time in the 1947 version. So not all the costumes were 1940s.

I think this so-called goof is wrong. The costumes looked pretty 1920s to me from everything I've seen.

Just because there's a goof listed doesn't mean it's accurate, especially about something that's as much a matter of judgment as fact.
