Would this film have been better with Van Johnson?

I love this picture, but Would Van Johnson have made a better "Big man on campus". I also see that they wanted to do a Judy Garland/ Mickey Rooney version. Would Mickey have played the Captain of the football team?

June was perfect. I wouldn't have changed her.
