The Movie Golden Earrings

I truly love this movie. It has magic and romance. I think the music is fantastic. This is my all time favorite movie.

I'm so glad someone posted on this board. I agree, this is a wonderful movie and it is going to be released on dvd in April as part of the Marlene Dietrich collection.

I loved this movie, as well, just for the entertainment value of it. Movies like this beg the question, why don't they ever make movies that sort of continue the end of another movie?? I'd love to see what happens when Ray Milland's character goes back to thank Marlene's character, and meets the kids she had with Zoltan, and a whole new adventure starts!! It wouldn't be as bad as just making a lame remake of the same old movie like they seem to do, ad nauseum, these days!!

And no offence, but what's up with KristinVS who has the user comment on the main page for this movie? Maybe they're pissed about all the bad gypsy stereotypes and I can't blame them, either. But if you let that keep you from ever watching and enjoying movies, you'd miss out on a lot of gems.

Sure, they stereotyped ALL "typical" groups back in the day. Indians, sorry, Native Americans if you like, got it bad so did the Blacks, along with every other ethnic community---even our enemies at the time were stereotyped so we'd hate them even more.

That sure doesn't make it right and I'm glad they don't do it--as much--these days but it's not going to be the reason to make me not like a movie unless it's done to intentionaly inflict harm on a certain group of people.

But I can appreciate KristinVS's viewpoint, whether I agree with it or not, right? That's what I love about these message boards, how about yourself?

I saw this movie years ago on AMC and again today on DVD, and I disliked it both times. The idealized yet condescending depiction of gypsies is tiresome, and the love story is corny and dull. The scenes with the Nazis have a little bit of spark, but the only life the movie has comes from Marlene Dietrich, who throws herself into her ridiculous role.

Unlike the poster above, I did enjoy the cinematography. The close-ups of Dietrich and Milland with their shining white eyes and teeth helped distract from their dialogue.

I saw Golden Earrings as a teenager in the 1960's on The Late Movie and I've remembered it all these years. I am anxious to see it again. While the criticisms offered here may well be valid, the movie has something, some quality, or why has it haunted me for almost five decades? I scan AMC frequently for it but so far its a no-show (pun intended). I met Ray Milland years later on Amtrack, curiously enough, en-route to Portland, Oregon, and I brought it up, telling him how great I thought it was. All he said was, "Ah yes, Marlena."

I hope you get to see it again. It's available in this DVD collection: amazon.com/Marlene-Dietrich-Glamour-Collection-Earrings/dp/B000E6ESXK. I didn't care for the movie, but maybe the magic will still be there for you.

What do you remember best about the movie?

What I remember best is Ray Milland's face when he saw Marlene and realized she loved him as much as he loved her.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time and Ray Milland and Marlene Dietrich were perfectly cast.

I re-watched it last night after a few years, and loved it even more so than before! First of all, both Marlene and Ray are two of the best looking, sexiest people ever, and to see them together is a wonderful experience. The plot is quite entertaining and it has a great atmosphere, but -most of all- what I liked better was the devotion of Marlene's character towards Milland.

She was always fascinating to watch as an irresistible femme fatale, but it was nice to see her, for a change, as a woman who was willing to do anything for the man she loves. Of course there was some "sacrifice scenes" in her other movies (Morocco, Witness for the Prosecution, etc), but this time she was so different from the very beginning and all through the movie. Milland was so handsome and charming, too, and despite they didn't like each other off-screen, their chemistry on screen was wonderful. And that final scene was so perfect and poignant that brought tears to my eyes.
