Did it make you cry?

I cried at the end of this movie, because it was sad and romantic and happy all at the same time... Did anyone else, or am I just a loony?

AFI's #1: "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn."

reply

Yes. What a deeply touching ending to a beautiful, unique love story.

reply

Indeed it did! Oh so romantic and so beautiful. and I love the music score by Bernard Herrmann and have the cd of the score and I even cry when I listen to it. That's what a hopeless romantic I am.

I love this movie and it is now in my DVD library. I cried at the end as well. They just don't make them like this anymore.

Terrible, just terrible!

I always cry at the end of this - in fact, I've sort of become like Pavlov's dogs regarding the final scene - I don't even have to watch the whole movie anymore, just cue up to Gene Tierney rising from that chair with Rex saying "And now you'll never be tired again..." Off they go into the mist, and off I go, completely undone...

Incidentally, along with SOMEWHERE IN TIME this is the film to which I always refer people who don't 'get' what happens to Old Rose at the end of James Cameron's TITANIC. It was a direct tip-of-the-hat to these films.

Those of you who think you know everything should politely defer to those of us who actually do!

reply

I guess I have to join the tissue club. Yes, I cry everytime I watch the end because love does trancend death.

reply

I don't know how many times I've seen this movie, and it always makes me cry.

I agree with the comparison to TITANIC. When I first saw that movie, I immediately thought that James Cameron must have seen THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR.

reply

The ending of this movie also appeared to be similar to Maytime with Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald.

reply

YEP,CRY EVERY TIME, GREAT MUSH ENDING.

reply

It's sad that Lucy had to live so many years without him, but the end makes up for it certainly.

reply

I only saw TGAMM a few days ago for the first time. This film is deeply touching and magical, sweet and melancholy and happy all at once - enough to make any sensitive soul a touch lachrymose in the best kind of way! - and that soundtrack! It's so moving. I think this film is utterly charming and deeply beautiful - love transcendent over death, loss and time.

reply

Yes, the soundtrack is outstanding. You've also described the film in a nutshell. And welcome to IMDb. :)

reply

I am new to all this, and haven't seen what the music is but do you know? I love this film and am always moved by the music as she walks on the beach. Can you buy a soundtrack for this film?

Many thanks

Katie

Hi Katie and welcome,

Yes, there is a soundtrack! Did a little search for you. You can always go to Amazon.com and do a search there. Ebay is also a good venue as well.

Cheers!

I'm a crusty old male fart and I cry every time too. I think if you don't have an emotional response to the end of this movie you might qualify as a sociopath! The whole film is crafted so lovingly and acted so superbly it is one you can watch over and over and always catch some nuance you might have overlooked before. I also like the sense of independence and a love of solitude Tierney conveys in her outstanding performance. At first it seems a shame that this lovely young woman has shut herself off from so much of society, yet she is perfectly content. Also, by casting the ravishing Tierney it is perhaps more effective than if the role had been played by a plainer actress, someone like Barbara Bel Geddes. Anyway, watch it alone and cry your head off if you want to. It's good for the soul if you have one.

Absolutely. I'm 51 and 6'2", and I was sitting there with tears streaming down my face when there was a knock on the door. It was a man come to clean my gutters! "Uh, sorry, I got pepper in my eyes, I was just cookin'"

Then I took him through the kitchen where it was obvious there was no cooking going on!

I have seen this move at least 12 times and I cry at the ending every single time. The soundtrack is one of the best in terms of evoking the feeling of longing lovers have when they are forced apart due to circumstances beyond their control. Mrs. Muir is a widow twice over, first with her husband and again when the captain leaves her. Tragic, but that makes the ending all the more beautiful.

reply

Totally agree!

reply

Absolutely! I'm chilled by that final scene of them walking out the door. And of course the music is perfect!

reply

Tears of joy because they are finally together! I love the soundtrack and play it often...they do not make them like they used to!

reply

I always want to cry when I watch it. The ending has such a strong affect on me. I woke up this morning and heard it playing on the TV in the living room. Even then I could feel tears coming to my eyes. That movie always does that to me.

i have cried at the end of this movie since i was 12. i am now 48. besides for my addiction to gene tierney movies (my mother told me i have been in love with her since i saw laura when i was ten. she used to call me to tell me when amc was going to show one of her films)this is just a great movie.

reply

I just watched it again (for like, the 500th time), and I did get a little teary. Probably would have straight-up cried, but I was having breakfast at the time, and hate salty tea. ^^

reply

"And now, you will never be tired again..."

Yeah it makes me cry just to think about it...

- A point in every direction is the same as no point at all.

reply

I actually get the Pavlovian tear response in the middle of the film when Lucy is sleeping and the Captain is near her, whispering that she must find love in the land of the living, and that all dreams must die, but also, "What we missed, Lucia!". The whole box of Kleenex is gone.

reply

I don't know why, but while I am extremely emotional at times, I have never cried during a movie, and I doubt I ever will. Maybe it's because I've trained myself not to cry in front of other people...but had I watched "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" alone, I might have emptied a tissue box.

I'm a Rumrunner, and proud of it!

reply

Absolutely! I first saw this movie on AMC years ago, back when it showed good old movies. It gets to me every time I watch it. "And now, you will never be tired again." Oh dear, I'm getting the keyboard wet!

reply

You know, it's funny.... I have loved this movie since I was about four, and now being 35, I still have never cried during it. I always found it so uplifting.
Having been one of those children with a love of the melancholy, I always found this film immensely satisfying, emotionally. I am not a lover of happy endings, and though this ends happily enough, and beautifully, there were all the years of suffering for both of them in-between. It made it more 'valid', for want of a better word, for me.
I find the 'what we've missed Lucia' speech, to be very stirring. And at the end I'm just so happy for them, that I just feel triumphant.
Then again, I've never cried at weddings, either! LOL
I cry when innocents are being hurt, like ET, or baby seals being clubbed over the head... that sort of thing.
This beautiful movie just makes me feel glad.

You're not loony -- at least not for that. Nor am I -- at least not for that.

I probably cried for an hour at the ending and I'm a 50-yr-old straight male who does not like the Sensitive New-Age Guy thing.

reply

To 50 year old straight male: do not apologize for your crying, it's wonderful! The emotions engendered in The Ghost and Mrs. Muir are human emotions that really have no gender, although I think men can identify with the very masculine (but incorporeal) Captain who loves the earthly woman. And women can identify with Mrs. Muir.
