I love this movie. I first saw it years ago on Turner Movie Classics. As you say, after this one, a string of Ma and Pa Kettle movies were made. A few years ago I found a box set of the Kettle films at Walmart. I bought it just because I liked this one. i had read the book that this was based on years earlier.
The book was written by the real Betty. The film is very loosely based on the book.
I'm assuming that Hollywood worked it's 40's magic and turned this into the comedy it is, complete with these strange neighbors and friends..... an early version of Green Acres.

Read some of the other posts here and you can find out more about the real Betty and Bob. Life wasn't all this funny for them.

I found his one track mind about the farm funny, but when she left, I agree that he should have followed her to straighten things out. He know that she was insecure when it came to that blonde neighbor. He wasn't in the dark about that.
Oh well... it's a comedy and apparently, we aren't suppose to think too deeply about it.
