I'm curious what this film would be like for someone not familiar with Shakespeare's play.

It works very well since they understand the film's themes pretty well. Reading Othello of course gives you a better understanding of it.

As for Shakespeare productions I am not sure. It's a pretty difficult play to stage. The proper thing is to see Orson Welles' The Tragedy of Othello but that's not available in a good version save for collectors and archivists and even they have it bad.
