Another actress

This is an interesting psychological melodrama. The basic message of this film: a woman can't be happy working in a high powered job in a man's world and having a lot of sex! The love of a good man will sort her out and give her real reason to live. Nice old fashioned values.

Hedy Lamarr was adequate in the role but Rita Hayworth would have set it on fire!

I agree, I wonder what Rita Hayworth would have done with that role

Rita Hayworth would have been a great choice for the role of Madeleine.

I thought this too the first time I saw it, but if you watch it a second time, notice the scene in which she tells Dr. Caleb about her father, and how she was emulating his approach to life ... lots of romances with women, nothing serious. She thought he lived the most romantic and wonderful life, but he killed himself, which is the state she's in when we first see her.

Some people aren't built for one meaningless relationship after another. This type of life brought happiness to neither she nor her father.

Not to say that there aren't sexist undertones in the film. But how many movies have you seen from any era where a high-powered job was depicted as a happier alternative to a satisfying romance?

Hogwash! Hedy was the perfect choice....of course if your a Rita fan or a garbo fan or a grable fan, you would pick those. Rita was not a capable actress..and certainly no match to Hedy's face.

Andy Warhol once saw Bianca Jagger dancing at studio 54 and remarked "She's no Rita Hayworth, she's no Rita Hayworth."

One can't compare women to Rita. Hedy is just wonderful in this film, a revelation! I wish more people knew of this entertaining film that dares portray a woman as successful in business and attractive to men!

I agree, Hedy played the part splendidly.

I felt Hedy was excellent but the supporting cast members were weak. Hedy had very little charisma with the man she professed to love. The script was weak, contrived, convoluted, scenes awkwardly played and there was little dramatic truth to anyone's performance except for Hedy and her grease-ball older lover...who actually was her husbands at the time. Ironically, married 6 times...was it art imitating life? In any case, the supposed psychiatric issue and plot line of her being a nymphomaniac was handled badly and is perhaps why the film rings false on many levels...and why perhaps bigger stars weren't interested in the film. Ultimately, the film remained quite unsatisfying for me...aside from Hedy's wonderful performance.

I think Jimmy Stewart or William Holden would have been fantastic as Hedy's romantic interest medical scientist. The guy in the film, Hedy wouldn't have looked twice at.

Rita Hayworth was no better an actress than Hedy Lamarr. Fact is, and many people overlook it, Hayworth was pretty wooden in most of her films.

This is the first Hedy Lemar film I have seen. She is so beautiful and I love her accent. Her wardrobe in this is fabulous. I especially liked the dress and the white fur wrap in the early snow scene. Just gorgeous.
