Another Bogart gem

Dead Reckoning just aired on TCM.

Excellent film. Hadn't seen it before.

Bogart wonderful - as always.

Hey Flan,

I have to agree with you; I also have enjoyed this film over the years. Are there some similarities with Maltese Falcon? Sure there are, but it certainly is not a remake of that film. Is it a ground breaking film? Certainly not; it is simply a 1940s mystery that fits in quite well with the genre, and it is fun to watch. Just as some Western films may be similar in plot, the same thing is true with other film genres.

Bogart was wonderful as always, and Scott was very good also.

Best wishes,

I liked it a lot. It may be derivative, but it's also gripping, suspenseful, entertaining, and contains some fine performances (Lizabeth Scott is particularly great). Solid film noir all around.

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

Never heard of this one, which is odd since it's a Bogart film noir, but it's actually well-made and suspenseful at times---Rip's crazy friend with the sword was a trip in himself. It's playing on the MOVIES channel, which is unusual because they usually have their film noir film fests on Saturday nights.

Not a gem. Not a bad film and Bogart is good but it's well short of his best films. Too many moments that had have been pinched from earlier films and Lizabeth Scott, despite being very beautiful in some scenes and with that great voice, is not good enough to produce Bacall/Bergman/Astor chemistry.
