shareIIRC, they didn't know his name. They might have suspected his identity, but I don't think either would have believed he was capable of cold-blooded murder. They pretty much said so.
shareThey certainly would have known it was the same guy. The papers ran plenty of old file photos.
However, they (and only they) also knew that the timing was all wrong for him have killed George ..... at least by the means described.
