did anyone else think Agnes Moorehead was kinda hot?

I had only seen her before in Bewitched, where she was definately past her prime... but in this movie, not at first, but at her apt. right before she falls outa the window, there was some close ups of her face and I was thinking... man, she was kinda hot with an unusual, somewhat exotic look to her.

Check the IMDb profile for her, click the photos... there are about 15 from bewitched era, then a single solatary BW of her in her younger days... eee-yow!

Yep, I can see what you mean. There were several actresses that we know more about in their later years (past their 'looks' prime). Rosemary Clooney is a well known example. I first saw her in Coronet papertowel TV commercials far past her prime. But, look at her in "White Christmas." Hubba hubba! Lucille Ball is another example. She was hot in her very first movies (before hooking up with Desi Arnaz).

reply

have you seen photos of Anjelica Huston from her younger days?!? WOW!

reply

When I mentioned Rosemary Clooney, I actually meant Shelley Winters. But, it's the same thing: if you only know them in their later career, you don't realize how hot they were at the beginning. And, another example is Joan Crawford. Most people only know her as this mean b*tch from the biography "Mommie Dearest." But, if you see her very earliest work, she really was good looking. And, even in later years, her face might have had too much makeup but she appeared to be in rather good shape (for example, in "Johnny Guitar").

Florence Henderson... those early episodes of the Brady Bunch... Dang! Push those beds together, Mr. B!!! Homina homina

Has anybody seen Vanessa Redgrave in "Blow up" (1966), Nina Foch in "My Name is Julia Ross", Bette Davis in "Now Voyager!"? They were gorgeous looking in those films.
However I was never able to understand why Mary Astor was considered a beauty. First of all even for forties standards she was quite overweight and had an average face, certainly not beautiful. But maybe somebody can explain what was so special about her. I once heard a rumour about her love life and that she had a blue book in which she kept all addresses from previous lovers and I just couldn't imagine her finding any lovers...

reply

Watch some of Mary Astor's silent films. She was much younger, and more beautiful then.

reply

O.k., I'll try to catch one on TCM.

reply

Maybe someone else mentions them farther on, but, old photos of young Margaret Hamilton and Zazu Pitts. Oh yeah !

reply

Bette Davis was NEVER good looking, even in her earliest films. The make-up artists worked hard at it, but were never quite able to beautify her mug enough to hide the ugly under the cosmetics.

reply

In general I agree with what you wrote. But there's one exception: BD was lovely to look at in "Now, Voyager" (ca. 1942).
Probably the most remarkable make over in movie history.

reply

I was thinkin the same thing. She had some zest and electricity in the scene where Bogey visits her at her place.

"I had only seen her before in Bewitched"

Quite the switch....and I know what you mean. There are films where she is more docile....IMO don't miss watching her 'early' work, have never seen her in a bad role.

Yea, it's funny. I didn't realize that she was the mother from Bewitched, but during the scene with Bogart she did come off waiting and available.------ Her gorgeous neck was just asking for attention and when she kneeled on the pillow to open up her box of candy, that was a very lovely feminine move.--- But boy, she really knew how to get angry. Cowabunggaaa....

I don`t think she was hot in the movie. I kept trying to imagine both Bogie and Bruce Bennett with Agnes in a romantic way, and I just couldn`t believe they could even fall for her. But she was a wonderful presence on the screen, and a very believable murderess.

reply

Now for the total opposite of "hot", check out Agnes as the white trash housekeeper in Hush...Hush,Sweet Charlotte.

reply

Yup, she was a hoot in "Hush, Hush". Agnes was very versatile. About 6 years before this she put on convincingly-dowdy image as Charlie Kane's mother in "Citizen Kane".

reply

Yep, I've seen her in a few old movies and she was definitely an attractive lady!

reply

On that same though track, I can think of several stars/co-stars of 1960s television who were quite the looker back in the day. Barbara Stanwyck of "The Big Valley", Yvonne DeCarlo of "The Munsters", and sure Agnes Moorehead of "Bewitched".

reply

Dangit, meant to mention Hope Lange of "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" - she was quite a hottie in the movie "Peyton Place".

reply

Yes, Agnes was definitely a hottie, especially in this picture. Problem was, for the majority of her cinema roles, her looks were downplayed. But this is one picture where she gets to look good. Another one is "Mrs. Parkington" (not yet available on DVD). And "The Bat" -- although she's already in her late fifties for this picture, she is totally hot in her tight sweaters and low-cut nightgowns.

"The Bat" is in public domain now, and can be watched online:

I always find Agnes Moorehead had that kind of presence. No matter what role or how big the role is, she make you notice her more then the presence of the leading casts.

reply

I certainly think she was pretty in her prime. In her later years she was attractive for an older woman. She always had a nice figure too, which is good, and that adds to looking nice.

Indeed. She's a palpable erotic presence in that scene. The sexy dress she wears helps immensely. She's one of my favourite femme-fatales. And this is the woman who played Charlie Kane's mother in Citizen Kane...a great, great actress.

The thing about the scene was that Agnes Moorehead is made up to resemble Lauren Bacall slightly. Her hair style is very like the one Irene wears when she picks him up with that car. An unintentional part is that Agnes Moorehead in that bit looks a fair bit like the Lauren Bacall of her later years. The symbolism shouldn't be lost on anyone.

I never saw Pollyanna until a few years ago, and it may make readers here wheeze, but I thought that movie was great. Way different than I thought it would be.

In that film, obviously Agnes is much older, right before Bewitched, but I loved her character. She starts out gruff, but when her character warms she is very fun and I actually wished there was more of her in that movie.

In Dark Passage, you get the feeling that, especially in the scene with Bob and Irene, that if she wasn't such a nosy jealous person (forget about her insanity for a moment) she would have been a fun person and date. But she was ugly on the inside. Agnes fleshed the character out so superbly, she sticks with you. A wonderful actress.
