Vincent being with Madge for 4 hours the night before...(spoilers)

When Bob confronts Madge at Irene's place with the info the private eye (formerly Madge's private eye) gave him about Vincent Parry visiting Madge for four hours the night before his wife was murdered...are we to understand that they were having an affair?

My impression was that Madge killed Gert because Vincent wouldn’t leave her and marry Madge. But when she found out that she still couldn’t have Vincent even after she murdered Gert, she then told the police that Vincent killed her in order to get even with him.
