The first Thin Man film was produced around 1934. By 1947, if alive, Asta resided in the Old Dog's Home

Not according to Asta's filmography on his fansite: http://www.iloveasta.com/Films.htm but it was the same studio (MGM) and Asta(originally named Skippy) or, at least, one of his offspring, did appear in the 1947 Song of the Thin Man, which was shooting around the same time- credited on this site as "Asta, Jr."- so they could have borrowed him for an uncredited cameo; he's only in a couple scenes.
