Mary Astor

Is it me or does Mary Astor look bigger than usual in some scenes? Almost like she's pregnant?

In her excellent autobiography, MY STORY, Ms. Astor notes she had a variety of illnesses during the time of CYNTHIA.
She also writes candidly (especially for the time) about having problems with alcohol throughout the 1940's.
If you haven't read her book, look for it, it is well worth the read.

Thanks for the insight, I have heard excellent reviews about her autobiography, and have never gotten around to reading it. I'll definitely check it out when I have time!

This was not Mary's first "mother" role. In 1944 she played Judy Garland's mother in "Meet Me in St. Louis." A little strange, isn't it, because in 1941, she played the part of a beautiful concert pianist in "The Great Lie." She won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for that role.
