Odd film, really

Very long too. At the beginning I thought the plot was silly. Then after several musical numbers, some very good, it got interesting when it became clear that the mother was going to try to control her son and his life like she tried with her husband (and did he trip or jump down those stairs....) Marsha Hunt has a good face that looked even better made up to look old, and she had a lot of long close-ups. It got VERY sad at the end. It seems her son left her to go on tour with a modern music band (Vaughn Monroe, who frankly had a dead pan way of singing) but he never came back! Not even to visit. It isn't until years later, judging by the change of color in the mother's hair, when his wife shows up wanting help that the mother makes any attempt to swallow her pride and go see the son herself, finally. It was very disturbing that the son could just leave, after really having a close (if not smothered) relationship with his mother, and just not come back and obviously make no contact. It caused the mother to feel like a failure.

and did he trip or jump down those stairs
