Regarding Soldier being in this particular prison

I have looked and looked on this board but am unable to find some comments I read earlier today about Soldier so I am starting this thread. There is also an item in the Goofs section that pertains to this. People were pointing out that Soldier's crime as shown in the flashback would have landed him in a military prison like Leavenworth.
While that is certainly true, I don't think he is in this state/federal pen for that crime. Right before they show his flashback, Soldier says this when asked what he plans to do after the escape, "Me? I've got a long way to go. Ever since the war I've been trying to get back to a little town in Italy. But you know how the breaks go. With me, one rap lead to another. Anyway, I was never able to make it."
So it seems plain that he committed some other crime or crimes which lead to his present predicament, but it all stemmed from his getting into trouble for helping that girl in Italy. What do you guys think?

I agree, he should have been in a military prison for that. But he's in this prison for something else, probably. The reason we're shown his original crime is because it's the beginning of his unlawful streak. It's also because every inmate has a history with a girl, and is in prison for a crime somehow related to that girl. (Except Kid Coy, but he too mentions his girlfriend somewhere in the film)

Even the opening credits name the actors as "the men on the inside" and the actresses "women on the outside".

Never be complete.
