Charlie's father

I missed something? The death of Charlie's (John Garfield) father.
Was it a robbery? And, why Charlie and pals immediately knew what would happen, when the car arrived, as they ran away immediately.

Charley and his pals were (as noted) young, neighborhood guys. Yes, it was a gang war so when such things happened in that particular way they knew what was going on (in much the same way that a kid today might see a drive-by coming). Rossen and Polonsky (d,w) knew this and this scene is really just another of many examples of brilliant writing and directing in this film.
