The last 20 minutes are so amazing. The suspense!

Matte paintings and sexual tension straight from the start are amazing and everything is so masterfully done, but enough can't be said about the last 20 minutes or so.

It goes way beyond what Hitchcock were doing at the time (or ever did). It almost reminds me of The Exorcist or some De Palma films that came out many decades later. Amazing film. One of the greatest films ever.

Totally agree!

I've seen this film a few times, but not for years and years and years - until today. And even though I knew what happened from previous viewings, it had been a while, and I was fraught with tension just watching that climactic scene! Kathleen Byron's Sister Ruth gave me chills of fear, literally! It was truly gripping stuff, really creepy, incredibly tense -- and that's from someone who's seen it before, lol.

One of the most sensational final acts in cinema. Absolute batshit crazy, staggeringly beautiful, unbearably tense. Kerr and Byron are brilliant.

I completely agree - I'd easily place this among my personal ten best films ever made.

Wow! I’ve never heard of this one.

Powell & Pressburger had a run in the 1940s as good as any by a director(s) in film history, I think, making one great movie after another... but if I had to single out one masterpiece, this would be it. As well as a gripping story and dazzling performances, it's got to be a strong contender for the most beautiful film ever made in Technicolour.

I’ll be searching it streaming somewhere tonight.

Just finished it. The last moments were indeed amazing and the look on Sister Ruth’s face made my hair stand up. From the first time I saw that Bell I knew that place was not safe. Lol

Great film!

I'm glad you liked it! Yes, Byron's performance in those final moments is blood-chilling.
