'Pass the celery'

Why do they have a plate of raw celery for dinner? I've never heard of anyone eating celery like this. Is this a custom in different parts of the US?

The celery in this case was a first course, an appetizer, like the fruit cup they were eating in the first meal. You'll still see it served that way, sometimes as part of a canape tray. It's also frequently served with the stems filled with peanut butter or cream cheese.

There's absolutey nothing appetizing about celery unless you like the taste of expired leaves.

Have you seen "All About Eve" and the scene where Bette Davis grabs a stalk of celery at the table? I think serving raw vegetables at dinner used to be fairly common. I know my mother used to sometimes put a relish dish with raw celery and carrots on the table sometimes. But, I think it's not something we do or see much anymore....

We always had veggies like that, as an appetizer....celery sticks, carrot sticks, radishes and black and green olives. It was a Fail Safe way of getting my brother and I to actually EAT veggies. (VBG)

(We usually had either Ranch Dressing or sweet red "French" Dressing for dipping)

I do hope he won't upset Henry...
