Tribute To Gail

Gail Russell will always be remembered for her beautiful eyes and charming smile. This was one of her best performances and, wherever the lost souls of Hollywood go when they leave this spinning ball of mud, I hope she was finally victorious over her personal demons. Sleep well and smile on us again, Gail.

I love the way she handles that team of horses in her first scene. She urges them into a full run, skids around a corner, and comes to a dead stop right on her mark, while standing up. It's pretty impressive.

Just saw it last night. She was as lovely as... Audrey Hepburn! No lookalike but she had that tenderness in her eyes that is quite touching... And she was a fine, very sensitive actress... Was also very surprised by John Wayne's excellent acting... His love scenes with Russell with no words are so tender...
so simple and rings true... were they in love? She did make another movie with him after (Wake of the Red Witch)... Anyway, would like to see more of her.. And, yes, may she rest in peace wherever she is now...

She is very lovely. I wonder if her beauty is of a type that appeals more to a modern audience ?

Modern, old fashioned, you name it. I'm old, and I've loved this film and Russell's beauty and performance for many years. For all her terror about performing--terror that caused her alcoholism--she's perfectly natural in this film. There was a bruised and vulnerable quality in her eyes that men of any age or era would find beautiful. It's a very endearing movie; now there's an adjective I thought I'd be using about a John Wayne film.

There were some at that time that tried to compare her looks to Hedy La Marr. She lacked the mystique or true beauty of La Marr, but certainly attractive in her own right. BTW, most brunettes at that time tried to look like Hedy.

Surprised by Wayne's acting? He was always excellent. I'm surprised whenever anyone is surprised that he was good.

One of the factors that makes this a true classic.
